Treating Stroke With Chinese Medicine

Over the years, I have treated several patients for side effects due to having a stroke. Both acupuncture and herbs can be effective for symptoms such as headache, paralysis, and facial palsy. Generally, treatment should start as soon as possible after the stroke (once the patient has been stabilized) to get the best results.

The most recently published research focuses on the use of herbal formulas:

A study out of Johns Hopkins University looked at Ginkgo Biloba as a form of preventive medicine. It found that giving mice gingko extract before and shortly after they had a stroke resulted in less damage done by the stroke.

A Korean study found that a traditional Chinese herbal formula helped to reduce the risk of patients suffering a second stroke, and is possibly even more effective than aspirin therapy.

Another traditional herbal formula was found to be beneficial in treating post-stroke depression, according to a Chinese study.
